This may be a dumb question. I know that a lot of people use a fuge to grow macro algaes, but the way my tank is i can't have a sump or fuge. Is there anyway to grow macro algaes right in the DP? If so what kinds, and how come everyone grows it in the fuge instead of the tank?

There's no reason you can't put it in your dt. I would be careful with some types as you will probably be surprised at how quickly it can grow and overun.have you thought about a hang on refuge?I have a seperate refugium full of chatoe and run a reverse light cycle to help ph.

I never thought of a hang on one! thanks. I still have to wrap my brain around how to fit a hang-on fuge, skimmer, and filter onto a 20g....but an in-tank may work also...

Macro algae's like cheato need a lot of pruning and can snag on your LR, corals, and crabs can get on them, never let go and eat it up. Life is easier if it's in the fuge.

Calcifying macro algae's are impervious to snails and crabs (basically) and can be planted in your DT. But these kind also absorb Ca, unlike cheato. So there are pro's and con's to calcifying macro's. (They're also less efficient at removing Nitrates compared to fast growers like cheato)

They have a great selection of both: ReefCleaners.org | Clean Up Crews and Macro Algae - Home

Thanks! I may get one of those in-tank fuges and add some cheato. Would that be a good idea? Would it help to reduce my nitrates also? Or could I get Ulva, then when it grows I can pull some out and feed it to my tang!

Ive always wanted chaeto in the DT tank. I could put it in some sort of a long acrylic cage behind the rocks :)

I was thinking the same thing! But would it get enough light behind the rocks?
