I'm not sure if this question belongs in the 'Filters, Pumps, etc..' or 'Live Rock' or if it's off topic.

Can you use a trickle filter to cut down on the amount of live rock in the tank?

There's a lot of hype around Fluidized Bio-Filters. Are they as efficient as people say?

Yes, although bioballs will catch gunk, requiring maintenance. Also, it doesn't develop anaerobic areas like real live rock does, so you're stuck with nitrates.
