My sg has slowly climbed to 1.028. If I do a 5 gal wc on the 46gal system with 1.020 water how much should it lower my sg?

I would have to do the math but the rule of thumb is that you dont want to lower your SG by more than .001 per day. I believe that you should be ok doing that 5 gal change. Check it afterward and make your adjustments accordingly. Any idea how it got that high? are your top offs being done with pure RO/DI water or have you been using salt water?

I don't do many top offs since I use a glass top and a wc once a week my evap is low. 1.028 isn't to bad I usually keep it at 1.026

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Top off with FW, no math involved. You are still going to have a fluctuating value if you do not have an ATO. My head would literally explode if I had to calculate volume FW to achieve a SG of a with a current SG of b.

It really is just that simple. I could understand if you want to get to 1.025 from 1.030 or higher but that is not the case.

You must just like math or a challenge. ;)

To answer your question, if I did my math right, that would bring you down to 1.026X. I used 40 gallons for water volume.

This should take you down to 1.027. (41*1.028 + 5*1.020)/46

We have a winner, 1.026 was the final SG after the WC. Impressive math skills!
