I have this problem as well and it seems to be a common one that the durso standpipe fixes. I am going to make one any day now and will let you know how it goes. Good luck!

you have to install round foam pre-filter on your overflow. I removed mine a few months back and i just learn to live with the sound. it does beat cleaning that filter foam everyday..

I have an overflow essentially identical to that one. It originally had a foam piece that surrounded the stand pipe and on that was stuck in the standpipe that was about 5" long. Well after a couple weeks I couldn't figure out why my overflow wasn't drainind properly and of course it was the damn sponge all clogged up. So I removed it and left the one around the pipe and it works so quiet you can't even hear it. I think what it does is keeps a "tornado'' from forming and making the sucking sounds. Just me experience.

Prefilter foam is nitrate factory and could clog. There are a few DIY mods you can try. Google "durso overflow" or "stockman overflow" and you will find silencers. Both designs work but I personally like durso because it doesn't require adjustments. Stockman design is compact but you have to do trial-error adjustments.

I made it real quiet. I bought one of those sponges that you use to clean a car with. Looks like a figure 8 and is around 9 inches long, and 4-5 inches wide and 4-5 inches thick. I crammed that in the top of my overflow, and now it is pretty quiet! Cant even hear it at all!

you will want to rinse that out really good every 2 or 3 days or your gonna have a Nitrate issue really soon.

the sponge that i am using is actually not in contact with the water at any point. It sits on top of the pre filter sponge and just blocks the noise
