So im trying to understand what kind of pump or how big of one i would need for a 30gal sump. The LFS has like a hammerhead or barracuda pump but they look like they would flow waaaaaay to much lol. Any help is welcomed i have a 75gal DT.

    Thanks

I think that a lot of people use a brand called eheim and have a lot of luck with them. Some use mag drive pumps too. Of all the posts and reviews i have read i would say either of these would be good for what you need.

I have a Eheim 1250 for my 10g sump/fuge and it's great. Low noise, low heat. It's expensive, but a great pump. I had a mag drive several years ago for a different tank and it produced more noise and heat--it was cheaper though!

I have a 40gal sump for my 90gal DT with 1100GPH 27' Max head, but my sump is in my walkout basement & my DT is in my theater room.

The important question is not what kind of pump it needed for your sump, but what pump is needed for your system. Where is your sump going to be, how many feet is it from the pump to the top of your DT, how many 90 & 45 degrees are there, are you looking for an internal or external pump.. These are all very important questions that must be asked & answered to get a proper pump size. Plus you always want to go over sized & never under. ;)

Sounds like you might have the answers to my questions. My sump will be setting right next to my tank and with my power heads right now I have 69X turn over rate. The sump wet/dry filter combo im getting has a max GPH of 1500 so something that will support close to that, because I will be getting a much larger tank in a few months. What pump would you recommend?

You still haven't answered the questions though? Importantly what size tank are you planing on going to? Any tank over 120 tend to have two or more overflow boxes. If that is the case your water pressure will drop as soon as it splits to each box..

Sorry about that the pump will be going right beside my tank with my sump and yes i will be buying a 300gal tank. But it will be a few months before i move and get it and then a few to actually set it up. So i just wanna buy something that works for both now and later.

For as far away it will be about 3 feet below my DT and im still learning on the pumping aspects of the whole thing so i dont know how many 45 and 90's there will be, I would like to have 2 return lines.

Thank you for all the help. Im really trying to get some education on the whole sump setup subject.

You want to run a pump that returns water to the DT at no more than 10 times the sumps volume at whatever head height your system will have so the skimmer can be more efficient, keep bubble from getting to the DT and to keep sump noise to a minimum.

So the sump volume will be 30gal so no more then 10x that? I sorry but i have no idea what head height is but i assume it is the amount of water that is required for the skimmer to operate? I have micro bubbles now and they are very unsightly. Sorry very new to this aspect of reef tanks, feel kinda lost lol

Wow a 300gal? The end result is that you'll be buying one for the 75gal & another for your 300gal. Are you going to use the same sump for the 300gal? For a 300gal you might as well as use the 75gal you have now as a sump with an external pump.

To get a pump that will drive a 300gal & back it down for a 75gal use is a tough one.
