I have been contemplating my 29g stocking list for the past few weeks. I had several fish on my list and have come to decide that I will have a semi-aggressive fish in my sps reef-tank. Will that work?

My current wish list is a Cinnnamon clown, a Swales Sissguard Basslet, and two Yellow Stripe Clingfish. That puts me at 11". But I like the look of the Longnose Hawfish. At just 1" longer than the Cinnamon Clown, it will only put me 1" longer on my stocking list, and is also semi-aggressive like the clown.

What are your opinions and/or experiences with this fish and do you think it will get along with other tank-mates? Will semi-aggressive fish do OK in a reef tank?

P.S. - I noticed that LA lists it as "Reef safe, with caution." Is this a fish that may nip at clam mantels?

I know that they will kill any cleaner shrimp or other shrimp, they have an appetite for inverts and I am not sure how they are with coral

Brennan, I am glad you caught that! I want to have several kinds of shrimp in the tank. :( Hmm...

Would this fish also reek haveck to the Clingfish which are "peaceful" and only 2" long?

Look at the compatibility chart on your link. That should help some. I have no experience with those fish. Looking at the size of the clingfish they could become a dinner for your hawkfish.

Size is what I was worried about. It says that hawkfish and gobies are compatible.

IMO it just depends on the fish, same thing with Dwarf angels and corals, i think that falco's are the most peaceful out of them all.

The hawkfish may eat the clingfish because of the size difference, but I know for a fact that he will kill any shrimp you put in the tank.

I guess that is out of question then. I want 2 cleaner shrimp and 2 peterson shrimp.

I feel your pain, I originally wanted a flame hawkfish for my tank but when I found out they will kill shrimp I said no.
