I'm starting up a new tank and would like to use live sand and use dry rock instead of live rock. Any problems with using the live sand?

I would put at least one piece of live rock too.

Dont bother with the live sand. Get nice clean sand and use live rock. If you are using pre-bagged sand its not really live. If you are getting sand from another reefer's tank that would be different, but at the end of the day, most of the critters you are hoping to put into your tank are going to be in the rock. Eventually they will make their way to the sand. If you are trying to save money on the rock, just get a few pieces of live rock to seed your dry.

You are also paying for water so you are not getting the weight of sand you think you are.

Has what he said ^^ Your better off just going with clean sand and dry rock but also get a piece or a few pieces of live rock for it to seed all dry rock.
