Hi there, planning ahead for my new aquarium and it just hit me, does it matter what kind of live rock i buy, i'm just going to place it in the sump? and roughly how long will it take for my dead rock to become live?

Is for example fiji live rock better then another kind? What differences are there really?

    Thanks :)

I would suggest base rock in the sump since its not going in on the display. I believe live rock is live rock no matter where its from. Its just some rock looks better or has better color than others. The price difference is only because where they get it from and restrictions.

To be honest I would look for a good dry base rock instead of live rock at 3 times the cost per pound. The base rock will take a few extra weeks during the initial cycle to become "live rock" and as long as you water parameters for calcium, magnesium, and alk are correct the Coraline will soon cover those rocks and you'll never know it started as plain base rock.
I doubt they will ship to Sweden but the 3 excellent sources of rock many of us use are:

+1 on that. If you have live rock already, buy "dead" rock and it will seed. Also for your sump I would use rubble

Dry rock = Dead rock YES
Coraline algae cannot be ADDED. It grows on the rocks over a period of time. I add stuff called "A and B" into my reef and this will help coraline to grow everywhere.
Here is the link Alkalinity & Calcium Marine Supplements: Two Little Fishies C-Balance I dont necesery recomend this brand or this size bottles. I buy this stuff at my local fish store for $26 for two 1 gallon jugs. Brands dont really meter ether.

This will also help you corals if you ever intend to add any.

GARF.org sells them. IPSF.com sells them. However, the easiest way is to get some live rock that has some on it or scrape it off of a friends rock that has it. When my customers want some, I just scrape some off one of my rocks into a little bag with saltwater and tell them to dump the bag in front of a powerhead so the coralline spores spread throughout the tank.

I have a question can you add dry/dead rock to an established tank? or does it have to be cured first?

Never seen them before, mine was introduced into the tank on the backs of my snails and on the base of a few coral frags... now it covers all my koralia powerheads and is starting to cover my overflow box and back wall of the tank too.
