If it was cured rock the only die off would be a bit of bacteria not corals and shrooms and stuff. they wouldnt die off with a few seconds out of water from tank to bucket then bucket to tank...What would die off other than bacteria which could be brought back without any spikes....wouldnt the new rock just be reestablished from the rock in the tank? I am new forgive me if I sound ignorant I just have to know...I buy stuff like shrooms on rocks and it doesnt throw me in a cycle..I dont think so what is the difference?...... right or wrong PackLeader?

I would just pick up some base rock. I did 90% of my tank in base rock. Looks just like live rock now.

My whole tank is base except for one small peice. I would like PackLeader to stop in and fill me in though...It seems to be important for me to learn this...And it would help the thread poster also...

The bacterial die off is what causes the parameter spike and consequent cycle. ;)

    Ah ha

    I think I got it ?
the bacteria present in the system, is determined by the amount of nutrients, there cannot be excess bacteria, it would starve to death

so if you add new live rock, irrespective of it being cured on uncured, there will be more bacteria than present nutrients can support so bacteria will die off

the difference if you buy a shroom, or Zoa or any other coral, is simply that in addition to extra bacteria on the rock, you also get additional bio load (food for said bacteria) from the life forms on the rock - so the new addition sustains itself and a spike if largely avoided

    is this about right?
