IME - You can, best if its cured live rock, which means there will be limited die off in your tank as die off from uncured live rock could cause a secondary amonia and Nitrite spike
which you dont want when the tank has sensitive life forms in it

if you buy uncured, you can always cure it outside of the DT - in large buckets etc

Well if it is just a couple rocks it should be ok but still you will see some change in params. I second Steve on this and say cure it outside of the DT in buckets.

I've read the stickies and just don't seem to grasp it all. Can I just let it sit in a 5 gallon bucket of water for a week? Also, if I get some from a friend who is taking their tank down will I have to cure that too?

ok, if it comes from an existing tank, it is already cured. BUT it must stay wet. If it has sponges or other things on it they may experience dieoff if this is done wrong. I would recommend using the following process:

    1. take a clean (and well rinsed so as we do not subject the DT to detergents) bucket, and put it in the OLD_TANK. place the live rock in the bucket (Which is full of water and then move the bucket to a water tight trash can such as one used for water changes).
    2. rent a moving van (you don't want huge buckets of water flying around in your car now, do you?
    3. reverse the process in step 1. This ensures the LR is never exposed to air. No curing will be necessary.

Why put the bucket in the tank then the rock in the bucket? Why not just get a bucket of saltwater and go and take the rock out and drop it in the bucket and take it home. And rent a moving van for some live rock? Just transfer the rock to the bucket then to the tank a few seconds in the air is not going to cause a big die off. You can keep most corals and mushrooms and stuff out of water for a short period of time and it wont die...so just go get the rock save the bux on a movin truck and take it home and dump it in the tank no biggie...

Cured or not, you will have die off and the tank will have to re-cycle.
I would suggest using base rock to finish a tank

would it also depend on the size of tank and the amount of rock they want to add? could too much at once cause some problems?

If it isnt cured yes it could cause major problems...If it is cured you should be able to switch it from tank to tank without any problems. I may be wrong in this statement and the one above but I think the bucket in the tank and the truck rental is to much action for a rock switch...If I am wrong shoot me...
