Hey guys, I'm setting up my first saltwater tank. So far I have dry sand, dry rock, and saltwater mixed and in the tank + sump. I bought a few pieces of live rock but it looks like it has aiptasia on it. I've removed the rocks just in case, since I'm just getting started I don't want to fight something if I don't have to.

Here's a video of the rocks in question, what do you guys think?

I'm thinking of taking the rocks back to the LFS and just start cycling some other way.

If you have some aiptasia problems, what I do is boil some water and put in into a shringe. Then I give the aiptasia a dose of boiloing hot water. Just make sure that you only get the aiptasia because you don't want to kill everything lol. This has been working for me.

Well, I don't have a problem yet. I just noticed it on the few pieces of live rock that I purchased today. Do you guys agree that it's better to just not introduce the problem to begin with?

I would agree with that to a point, but I'm sure you paid good money for the Live Rock. Boiling water will take care of it for really cheap.

Ok, thanks! I'm going to try to kill the ones that I see and just keep an eye on things.

i would not worry 2 much about apitasia, they can indeed boom if your parameters are right but seeing you are cycling your tank they wont reproduce like crazy, an alternative to boiling water is concentraited lemon juice, thats what i use and works wonders.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If this is a few pieces of isolated rock with aiptasia I would be more aggressive and remove the rocks, treat the entire rock and recycle or seed them. Introducing live rock with aiptasia on it or other pest such as majano often leads to a nightmare down the road. I believe the trouble you have now with treating the existing problem will be nothing like the problem down the road, trust me.
