haha. yes, I was suggesting to use Solatubes for your lighting, in addition to LEDs.

Solatubes are basically skylights, but duct-work points the light directly to where you want it. You would also need less "artificial light (LEDs).

Check out this blog...shows how they are installed and a;so shows them being used (no other lighting) over 3 large reef tanks.

Solatube® Daylight Design: Solatube Daylight in your Aquarium?

If you don't like the look of them you could build a canopy for the tank (Which I assume was already going to happen).

LOL, I don't like the yellow of solatubes, but based on costs, that's the way I'd go with a large tank.

Yeah, 1700 sounds good until you have to buy everything else. I agree with Evolved, 10k doesnt sound out of line at all. If you want SPS you are going to need plenty of Vortechs!!!!!

You could keep a small reef and use the 300 as a FOWLR though. I always wanted something like that for some bigger fish. I bet you could do that for 3K or so.

I think you should snach the tank then just use it as a FOWLR. Then once you save up you can get some coral and LEDs.

You will spend 10k in no time! I'm over 12 and haven't set up my fuge or added any coral! And that is on a 210g.
