lighting and filtration for a cycle

    do you need lighting or any filtration while cycling a tank???

    No. Lighting is pretty useless since nothing is growing in the tank except bacteria. So it is basically just using electricity for no reason, and possibly fueling algae growth.

    Filtration is counter-productive, since you want things to stew a little during a cycle. Basically, leave the filters and skimmers off until your nitrates start to rise.
