even though they only grow up to 3 inches, it would be too small?

Thats a fairly border line statement. A few 'reef safe' wrasse require specialized care (ie lots of pods). Most wrasse are quite easy to care for if your talking the reef safe wrasse varieties. Fairy, flasher, and Halichoeres wrasse are all easy care & eat pellets, flake, brine & mysis without and problems as well as make great tank mates often bring out more docile or hiding fish to swim. With those breeds in mind there is definitely alot of choices in your price bracket at liveaquaria.

Leopards, cleaners, Potters & some of the others yes they are pods eaters and thus considered expert only. Just do your research compared to your experience levels and there should be no problems.

Most of the dubbed 'non reef safe' or FOWLR wrasse get bigger than what would fit in a 34g so not worth mentioning.

I would not do a leopard wrasse in a 34. It's simply too small to support one long term. It might work for a while, but I'm willing to bet it won't end well. Leopard wrasses are delicate.

I really recommend a minimum of a 4' tank for a flasher. It's not that they "need" that much gallonage, but they do need the swimming space when they doin' their thing.

If you're dead set on a wrasse, a smaller species of Halichoeres would probably work. A possum wrasse would definitely work.

And your tank MUST be covered if you're keeping any wrasses.

I too feel that 34gals is too small for a flasher. They stay small but are very active. Possum wrasse would work, but their looks are not for everybody. What about some type of basslet (royal gramma, black cap, etc.)?

What about a sixline, a royal gramma or another clown?

this is a false statement, of all the feer fish species wrasses have probably the highest percentage with specialized requirements. research before you voice your knowledge.

Your statement is true, many wrasses have specialized needs, however, I agree with khowst. While some wrasses, like Leopards, are not for beginners, they are really not that difficult to keep as they eat a wide range of foods, not only pods. But, I agree, a 34 gallon tank is not the best place for most wrasses.

What about something midwater, like a Cardinal or Firefish?

    I concur on all accounts.

And no, I don't need to do more research, as I've kept them for many years.
