Approximately 60 years ago Lee Chin Eng attempted what most considered impossible at the time. He designed and documentated a marine system that provided the first habitat that successfully kept marine fish and inverts alive. His concepts of this simple system can be seen in the development of the Berlin system, the bases for the systems we use today.

He took a container, added live rock, simple airstones for circulation and oxygenation and natural sun light. His idea was that marine systems are more successful with the development of a nutrifying bacterial bed, than a sterile environment void of the organisms that complete the nitrogen cycle. Only patience and determination made his ideal come true, a lesson that we all need re-freshed ( me more than most ) in those moments of frustration when we try to rush our ideal design into fruition.

Would we be where we are today without Lee Chin Eng ?

Great information Coralline. I remember my first reef tank in college 12 years ago. it was a 29 gallon with live rock, sand and an airstone in the back for circulation. I used 2 Normal output lights over it. I kept seahorses and even some coral. no where near as successful as what I have today. it is amazin how far we have come.

Now there's a name you don't hear much anymore. Thanks for giving tribute to a true pioneer.

Me too! I was using undergravel filters in my first tanks. Metal Halide was too much to hope for.

    Thanks inwall. :)

Thanks mazaj. Not exactly traditional, but it just came to mind.
