I'm in the process of setting up a little frag tank. I have everything crossed of on my checklist except lighting. I don’t know what I want. I was going to go with my usual T5 setup that has work on my 2 DT. I have recently have done some reading about LED lighting systems. LED setups seem to have enough output for all types of coral from what I have read in different reviews. Is this true?

Has anyone had experience with LED's? This is what I was looking into.

To my knowledge that is more for adding shimmer than running a tank with... Most LED fixtures for stand alone lighting have FAR more LEDs on them.

Yep. That is, in all honesty, a very quick, cheap way to try and have LED lights. Four, one watt LED's are not going to grow corals.
They are more meant to replace the standard flourescents on fish only or freshwater systems, or to add moonlights to larger tanks.

I know at a lfs here in vegas they have a pico tank 3 gal with 8 leds on it 4 white and 4 blues it has lps sps and softies and they are all growing like weeds. this is a diy set up. the good thing about them is the avail. to change from 6500k one day to 22k the next. it is a good theory now but the cost and testing still needs to be done. as for a large system it will need alot of Leds to copare to t5s and or m/h. it is still like the t5s still work in progress. for right bulb configeration's for the best growth and coral

I have been running my led lighting system for around 9 months now and love them. I am able to keep any type of corals in my tank with good results.
