    Ok have had aquariums before both salt and fresh and I have a small pile of lava rock can this be put in with my dry rock and what live rock I will seed with? If so great if not back on self. Was at the LFS and was looking in the show tanks and we seen what appeared to be slate is that ok to use because you could do some cool stuff with it.

    Lava rock I wouldn't use at all. It is suited to freshwater more than saltwater specially with our use of the rock as a nitrogen filter. I would treat the slate the same as lava.

    I agree. Lava is full of unknown metals...

    +3 I've seen it used, but wouldn't trust it. High risk of metal impurities.

    Agreed with above. Lava rock will leach any number of minerals. Slate is not porous enough to be effective as a bacteria home
