Well bummer... Admist being really busy with the new baby I was not able to find a way to treat one of my clowns, wyoming white clown. He developed a black spot on his back and he started losing the black color on his back fin. He carried this spot for about two weeks when I began actively looking for a way to treat him. I couldn't find anything that wouldn't stress him even more by pulling him from the tank, dipping him and then putting him back in. He was eating and swimming normal every day so I figured he would pull through. I believe he has passed because I haven't seen him in over a week. RIP Hero (that was his name). I'm still not sure what happened but I'm going to stop buying livestock for a while and focus on equipment and proper husbandry.

I noticed my phosphates were staying at .03 even though I was slowly raising the active GFO dose. I did some inspecting and found that the rear chambers of my Nuvo 30 had a mat of detritus accumulated all along the entire bottom of the tank. I hooked up my turkey baster to a flexible hose and was able to stir up the detritus. It blew all over the tank. At that point I decided I probably should have just tried to syphon it out. How are you guys syphoning the back of your Nuvo tanks when it is basically impossible to get back there?

Thank you. It really stinks. He was my favorite.

On a good note. I bought myself an early christmas present, Apex Jr. I hooked it to a netgear wifi signaler (?) so I could get internet to it. So far I have it hooked to a temp probe, heater, skimmer, fuge light and power head. I'm liking it so far and can't wait to get other fancy equipment to add to it.

Well bummer... my other clown passed away. I was unable to nail down a diagnosis in time. From what I've read I believe both of my clowns caught Brooklynella. Both showed signs of losing color and tails turning white. My fist hung on for a couple weeks before passing and my second only lasted 2-3 days. I'm really bummed about this one because he was my first fish. He had come a long way with me and it was really sad hearing my wife tell me he was being eaten under the rocks.

I'm not sure how they contracted the disease and hopefully it does not spread to the 1 remaining fish, watchman goby.

oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about the loss :( it's always hard when one of our inhabitants dies but especially if they've been with us for a while. I had an outbreak of brook one time many years ago and it was awful! I lost almost all of my fish within probably 3 days - my engineer goby and black and white damsel survived - it's vicious and spreads so quickly it seems and there doesn't seem to be time to really diagnosis and then intervene in time. I'm thinking if your goby isn't showing signs yet, it will hopefully be good.

Thank you. I heard naming your fish was bad luck. I named both of the clowns and not the goby and the goby is the only one who has survived. I think I'm going to go a while before replacing them.

Time for an update. I've decided to go bare bottom. I installed the new skimz nano skimmer from bulk reef supply since they will handle the warranty on the skimmer for a whole year. It also has a white acrylic lid which matches the back white background perfectly. I have been sucking out sand with each water change and I am almost done getting it all out. While removing sand I found a large portion of sand that had calcified all along the back part of the tank. After disturbing that part of the sand the tank had another nasty bacterial outbreak. I did a large water change and replaced the carbon in the reactor. It cleared up after a couple days. My advice is to stir the sand a bit during water changes to make sure you don"t get any calcification. I believe an anaerobic layer formed under the calcified rock and released some toxins when disturbed. The silicon under that section even turned black which I'm not happy about. The tank is looking good now and I will hopefully have all the sand out in the next couple water changes. Here are a few pics.
