We "are" talking about Hydor Evolutions? because the old style has a shaft, but the new evolutions I just bought 3 weeks ago have no shaft...the prop is fixed to the mag..thus no start slap...where in the older models the prop slides up and down on the shaft causing the irritating slapping on start/stop when using a wave maker, that's the one that has the mod to quiet it with a tube or such...so I guess now I am confused because the post states Evo's....and it seems everyone is talking about the old style. : /

Sorry about that, I somehow missed that it was Evos and not the old style.

Have you tried disassembling the pump, and then reassembling it? Sometimes the bushing can be slightly out of align and you may just fix the noise by putting it back together. Or the bushing can be bad. I've had a brand new Evo starting in reverse because of a bad bushing (different problem but just illustrating that even brand new there can be issues). Since it was under warranty, I just had to email Hydor and they sent me 2 (an extra just in case?) new bushings for absolutely free. If you can't fix the issue, and it's still under warranty, then contact Hydor USA directly and they will mail you a new bushing which hopefully corrects the problem.

I'd take them back...like you said, they are not supposed to make the noise you speak of...
I am looking at the impellar of mine right now and it has the impeller attached right to the mag..and the diverter plate in between....and I look at the other old style and it has the same except no diverter plate and the stainless steel shaft that goes from base of motor to the hole in the shroud cover...then the propeller jumps this distance on start..that's where the tubing or straw comes in...as for the EVO, no shaft...just impellar attached to mag...when it starts the only click noise is where the play is between the mag and impeller has the diverter plate ...so it looks like if this is the noise..you could use a rubber tube, or something like that, but it would have to be sliced to size and then sliced down the side to wrap it around between the impeller and mag.....I tried to seperate the prop to see...but it don't budge, and I'm not having a problem...so I don't want to create one either....that looks like the only "fix" for this issue...so they have not quieted down any at all?:-/

Stand by..I think I just found the solution..off to the hardware store.. : )
