I was thinking of picking up a Koralia Evo (550 or 750) today to add to my simple Petco powerhead that isn't getting the job done by itself. Would it be a good idea? Are there any problems with them?

Good idea,I have two 750s in my tank that work well.I had them on a wavemaker for awhile and they worked fine though they did make a clicking noise at startup. There is a thread on here somewhere about a cheap fix for that if you think it's necessary.

Well I heard that sometimes they start on reverse, but I wasn't sure if it happened to all of them. So I should get one?

I have 3 750s and 2 1050 evos and have not had any issues with them at all. My wavemaker goes on and off every 45 seconds and occasionally i hear a click. For the price I love mine! Id suggest online purchase and not at a lfs for pricing... just my 2 cents

Well I have a $25 gift card to World Wide Corals, so I'll just go over there in a bit.

Another question: Would the 550 be enough for my 29 gallon including the Petco powerhead, or should I get the 750?

Id get the 750 in case the petco one stops working :)

I already have a mixed reef :) Here's my thread. It's a standard 29 gallon high tank. The only reason I'm getting another powerhead is because of some of the detritus that's building up in certain areas.

I'll see how much they are and, if it's not a lot more expensive than the 550, I'll get it :)

I have two of the Evo 1400's in my 100 G reef. I recently replaced them after over 2 years of continous service, starting and stopping every 30 seconds for a total of over 2.6 MILLION starts with only one issue early on. Hydor replaced the front covers under warranty no charge and it was good ever since. The only reason I replaced them was Big Al's had them on sale very reasonable and I was starting to see a little normal impeller wear which may or may not have slowed the flow a little.
I highly recommend them and in your case the 750 is probably the better choice. I have an Evon Nano 425 in my 16G bowfront and the flow is pretty lame even for a 16 G system, the 550 probably isn't much better and is the same physical size as the 750, 1050 and 1400 so might as well get plenty of flow.
