kick start cycle???

    ive had my tank running for 5 days now and ive had no ammonia spike.can i put a few raw prawns in a filter sock and leave it in the tank to start the cycle? but will it take a long time?

    p.s there are no fish in the tank
    just cured live rock and live sand

    A lot of people use raw cocktail shrimp. You might just need one though, unless your tank is really big.

    put a piece of shrimp in there preferable in an old panty-hose because they get real nasty after a week. this is how i cycled.

    if you used fully cured LR and live sand, you are not going to have a big spike...so you might have had your cycle already. Did you get water from the store or did you mix it yourself?

    I dont know if I would put shrimp in there...maybe put a little bit of fish food in there and check it again in a few days.

    But with FULLY cured live rock you could probably put a fish in there (clown or damsel) as it should be good to go.

    ive just added 2 prawns to the tank shall i turn my skimmer off?
    its only been running 5 days so still bedding in.
