Clearly you should put 2 damsels and a valentini puffer hehe just kidding as that's too small for a puffer when he got older.

I say a watchman and a pistol shrimp. They are a real entertaining pair.

The pistol is a crazy burrower and in my opinion the tiger pistol would be ideal in a small cube with the watchman. Also in my opinion not so ideal for bigger tanks as the burrowing shifts rocks if not stable and tends to cover corals on the sand bed or near to it. Try it in your cube then if you really want move it to the 40. My guess is you would end up keeping it where it is. I have one in my 30 and always have to clear lower corals of sand.

Just my opinion though. PS beware I have heard of them breaking glass before but have yet to experience that and you can always here him clicking away.

I doubt you will get firefish to school in a 14g.

I agree the helfirchi are very cool and expensive. regular purple are cool also and a lot less expensive. 3 or four are suggested as they are a schooling fish. They can be shy, keep in a low foot traffic area and tend to be seen out and about more.

All the above species tank suggestions are good. With that size tank, I like going for a single idea and truly showcasing it. Great examples have been mentioned like:
    Pistol/goby pair
    Mantis
    Clown/nem

    Ricordea garden
    Zoa garden

    Or something more modern:
A single hard coral with a spotlight led effect (acro casting a shadow, or a vase coral with a light off center. Like a strange saltwater art gallery (easier said than done)

and... as I typed this I look up and realize you already got the pistol/goby! Lol, great choice!
