Fill it to the desired level. With the overflow set at the desired height in display. Crank it on and have pre-mixed water ready to add.

ohk so make shure tank and sump are filled at desired level then crank it on????

im just wondering cause if my tank is filed to the top and the guy at the LFS said fill the sump so theres a inch and quarter room left at the top, i just thought that something would overflow but he said no the sump will go down to a level of water that i will need to keep it at at all times

    does that sound right ?

you might also want to unplug the return pump to see how far the water will raise in the sump, and if is going to over flow and make a mess in case there was a power outage

You are going to want more than a 1-1/4 from water to top of sump while running. Enough room for water in your display to drain into sump in the event of a power outage. The amount of water that will siphon from display depends on the depth of your supply. And if you have used a backflow device or not.

Backflow devices fail and most still siphon. Just at alot slower pace. I'm not sure I understand the 1-1/4. If 1-1/4 is the desired level in the sump, yes. I'll bet you and you house are a bit soaked huh? Be ready to sling water....

One other thing. Too little is better than too much water.;)
