When my interest first started in the reef system, I read about a successful reefer some place like in Singapore, Malaysia. Anyways I don't know if there is laws in our country regarding this or not, but what I read was the part of his success was that he often made trips to his local clean beach ;) and would fill water jugs full of sea water and this was how he did his water changes, just wondered if any of you that live near oceans have done this? I can imagine the water would be full of the stuff our corals would get food from plus other benefits.

It will also be filled of stuff that would make our corals be goners.

IMO sea water, at least taken from the beach.. is full of unknown things that would do more harm than good.

The green water in Boston with the slimecoat on top isn't exactly reef ready...
I imagine you could pull it off ok living somewhere near a reef tho.

Im guessing Boston water is similar to Jersey water....not what i want in my tank, unless i was looking for WODR (water only dead rock) system.... i hear they are not too popular now a days.

I've heard of some ppl locally who have done it with mixed results. I don't think I would trust it. I would try n get some offshore of possibe.beaches are full of
Sediments and crap brought on shore by waves.

I keep meaning to bring my refracto when I go surf fishing on weekends. I'm curious about how salty the water is by me.

I have a friend who only uses seawater from the beach here in Fl.
He has a 180 that's about 3 years old with mostly softies and lps but even the few sps he has look pretty good.
I prefer my ro/di and tmpr personally though :)

That's why I said clean beaches, hahaha! when I lived in SoCal I surely wouldn't get any sea water from my local beaches and that being Long Beach, Huntington Beach, you will probably end up with a tar ball plugging your skimmer, hahaha!! thinking like people in SoFlorida, i'm sure California has some clean beach water somewhere, maybe a couple hundred years ago ;) when I was in the philippines my wife lived near a beach with white sand and crystal clear water, I guess what the author of that story did not mention was if he actually got the water right off the beach or went out further and got it

The beaches in NJ are our own natural protein skimmers.

The people who do it successfully pull from at least 100 ft off the beach.. IMO, it costs more in the end and gives worse results than using ro/di & synthetic salt mix.

Exactly why i leave the water in the ocean ;) I dont mind tanking the few min it takes to fill up a bucket, add salt and powerhead, and come back in a day. lol.

Im trying to convince my gf to start a sea horse tank from my old 20 i have. We can find em pretty easy in the lagoons and creeks around my house. I told her on your weekly trip to tan and lay around, take a bucket and fill it up. Still in the works...
