hey im brand new here and to the saltwater world. im just starting to set up my tank (55 gal) this week end i saw a thing to speed up the initial water cycle. it adds the bacteria that needs to grow on the live rock. any one know if it works or pros and cons to doing this?

welcome to 3reef. i dont know anything about it. but what ive been told and learned. cant rush anything in regards to salt tanks. it might work, but then again could not , and end up with a whole lot of bad. good luck whichever you go.

Most of the time those products don't help much. The bacteria you need is everywhere, it just needs time to establish.

I use similar it comes in a blue pack with a yellow tail
its a Damsel fish - it helps you through the 1st 3 months when you have next to nothing to look at in your tank ( exciting hitchhikers, diatoms, tube worms, hydriods, mini snails etc aside)

the bottled products that indicate you can add one day and all your fish the next should be viewed with a little caution IMO

from my understanding it is live bacteria just to help speed up the initial set up. im not sure if that would be a good thing or if it could hurt the tank

It will speed the process but your tank still need to mature. Everything I've seen and read, it will still will take three months. the yellow tail damsel is a great idea and a spunky little fellow. My brother in law went to lfs and bought a tank after seeing mine. They told him to buy every thing includeing tank sump skimmer live rock/sand and premixed salt water. Then sold him a clown fish and yellow tang to pick up the next week! He lost his fish in two days. $2,00+ for a 55g and he still has to wait like every one else. Good luck, have patience and dont forget to enjoy!

Like a few have said, that stuff is pretty much worthless. Patience is the key. Your rock already has the stuff it needs. I added some crap to my water, being stubborn that I am, and it didnt help. All it did was turn my water a very irritating yellow which took about 3 weeks to clear up.

The slower the better. Good things tend to take time.
