well, the yellow tang, got a hold of something, ??, nothing in the tank is anywhere his size, i know that he has been swimmin back and forth, getting use to the new home, or looking for the naso tang, they were like peas in a pod

 

about the only thing that did come out of this, i found a new hichhicker

So why again do you think it is the DSB?
No gobies?
Cleaning crew?
What happened to the Yellow tang? stress?

What changes are you going to do now?
Why so much lighting? why not 3 x 250 HM and 2 VHO bulbs?

 

I assume you are going bare bottom Jay. Yes Mike makes a very compelling, logical, and scientific argument for a bare bottom tank. It does require the proper equipment and setup which Mike has done to perfection.

My DSB is attended to by nassaurius and cerith snails, fighting conches, hermit crabs, polycheates (worms), and skunk cleaner shrimp. I watch the DSB closely to ensure that there is free nitrogen which is indicative a complete denitrification process. I also have a sump refugium.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, but it is critical to export nitrates and phosphates!

well, i will try to answer this, w/o being to long

i have/ had a lot of nassaurius and 2 conchs (got rid of some of the nassaurius snails) i had 2 cleaner shrimps (lost) i still have a few scarlet crabs (not really big on crabs) and a brittle star (made it through) and a about 20 or so of other snails
i dont have a gobbie
while i was watching the tank because of the anemone, i was testing 2 times a day (i havent done that since the cycle) it seemed like it was getting better, but, infact it wasnt, i noticed the algae started again, only on the sand bed, kinda weird, so i started to test @ the sand surface, when i did this, the nitrates were more than double what they were just below the surface of the water, that told me there was a problem, so i started to read some of Mikes(Mojo) posts and did some things that he recomended to others, this led me to believe the DSB was crashing, so i tore the tank down, at first i was going to replace the LS with new, but i figured, why, so i went Bare Bottom, which is more SPS friendly, for one you need a lot of flow to keep everything suspended, which SPS love, while i dont know everything yet, i am setting it up per Mikes recomedations (reading his opinions)

im not sure what happened with the yellow tang ??? but he is fine, except the fin

with the lighting, for one i have my tank covered because of the wrasses (wont change that) so i lose some light because of that, and i have to get the lights off the tank, do get the heat down a bit, lol, plus the tank is 28" deep and it is the full 28" now (bare bottom) so for the clam/clams i need the light to get to the bottom of the tank, light deminishes prety well in water, most places recomend 175w for 18" and 250w for up to 25-30" and 400w+ for more than that, and the tank is 28" and being that i have glass lids, i want to get 400w'ers, but, i am still open for opinions, i havent bought them yet, but after seing some growth of a few other tanks w/ the same lights, that is another reason i am leaning towards the 400w
does that make sinse?, if you have an opinion im all ears, lol

one of the changes, right now, is Bare bottom , increasing the flow a lot, and getting the sump and stuff completed, this list will prob grow , and i need to get some more test kits, mine have been used a lot the past few weeks, lol

Are you just going to let the bottom get coverred in coraline algae or do you have a plan for that? When I maintained a bare bottom tank I found the coraline used up a bunch of calcuim as well as dropped my ph at night (until I installed a RDP refugium on the tank).

to be honest i am not sure, i thought about letting the zoanthids and the star polyps have the bottom of the tank, like a bed of flowers, lol
