You just have to know what they eat. :p Sand sifting stars and linkias are the ones I most commonly here of starving.

The sand-sifters eat the the micro-fuana(sp?) in the sandbed - thus eating it all then having nothing else to eat - meanwhile, you have some dead sand now. lol.

The linkias get pretty big and I am not sure what they eat.

    ...continued.

For example, the marble sea star should be fed "a supplementary diet of small peices of shrimp, mussels, or flake food," according to LA.

It says it will eat micro-organisms in the sandbed as well as detritus(found around rocks).

This star gets about 6" in diameter - I wouldn't suggest it for a 40g tank, but that's just me.

I had a sand sifter in my bio cube for over a year. My boyfriend bought it for me after my linka died while I was on vacation he felt like he killed it lol, but then the sand sifter died as well.. it was sad. I guess i'll do some super research on the star I buy and target feed it like crazy!!

That's the thing...they last a while - normally without bad signs - then they die rather suddenly.

Normally if you supplement its diet you will need to place the food near its mouth (middle of underside) so it notices the food.

I saw one that looked like the starfish was lifting its limbs off of the person's arm. It was pretty cool.
