I am upgrading from a 29g to a 40g breeder with a 20g refuge. I was woundering if this stuff would be overkill or just right for it.

Rio 2800ss return pimp, at 4ft it is pushing 642gph, which I am going to put a ball valve on it.

Eshopps pf 800, which is 800gph

    and I have 2 800gph wavemaker/powerheads.

I plan to do the refuge with the return in the middle, refuge on one side and my skimmer on the other side with 3 baffles in between it and the return.

Am I a winner, or do I have it all wrong. I have already bought the stuff, so I'm hoping to make it work.

How are you plumbing the return and what is your skimmer throughput? For flow rate, though the sump, you are probably too high for most skimmers to work at maximum efficiency. 3-5x your display volume is usually about right, in most cases. If you have a very over sized skimmer, it may be less of an issue.

This is a good point - if your skimmer is rated for 100+ gallons - then you would be great with that flow rate. But if it's only rated for 50 gallons that might not give the skimmer enough time to interact with enough dirty water to be effective.

I bought the skimmer used. It is a pretty good sized red sea berlin protien skimmer with a turbo pump that is adjustable. I had to buy a new impeller for it, so I know it's a turbo pump. It's probably rated for atleast a 75-100 gallons. Like I said it's a pretty good size. and it has 2 outlets on the top to where you can attach a hose to each one to direct where the water goes when it come out of the skimmer. It is 20 1/2 inches tall and 14 inches round

Try to pull a model # off the skimmer or a GPH rating on the pump.

You will want to get somewhere near the flow of the pump in the ammount of "dirty water" it should be fed.

If that pump is 14" round - it sounds HUGE and might be rated for much larger - in which case the full flow of that section would be appropriate for this setup IMO.

no, I mean the skimmer is 14" round. I will post some picts in a minute. I don't see a model number on it
