is there a way to further silence water entering sump?

Wow, there's a lot of bubbles coming down from the overflow, through the pvc and into the tank. The water comes down from overflow into a 45deg elbow, straight, another 45deg then straight into sump (not including t-valve to fuge and ball valve). It's a straight piece of pvc entering sump with a '90deg. elbow at the bottom. It's about 1.5" above bottom of sump, but there's a lot of bubbles. Everything's pretty quiet except for the gurgling of large air bubbles once they enter the sump. I cut about a 6" piece of pvc and drilled holes on the 3 sides of it to help the larger bubbles dissipate some, but it's still fairly noisy.

make sure the tubes carrying the water coming into the sump/fuge are under water. That will help.

What type of standpipe do you have? I would experiment with the air/water ratio until you get it right. I used to get the occasional large bubble too until I modified the air intake on my Stockman standpipe so I could adjust the air.

heya fellas! The exit is under water, at least 6-7". I'm using the Hofer Gurgle Buster in my overflow box. Hofer Gurgle Buster

My overflow goes into a small compartrment that is filled over the pipe outlet about 6in with live rock rubble and overflows into the skimmer section.Live rock rubble takes care of most of the bubbles. I've heard of people putting filter socks over the end of the pipe to take care of bubbles also.

This has been a huge source of frustration with me, in both of the systems I've built so far. I'm suprised it's not talked about more. I've spent a fortune in PVC fittings over the last year, trying different methods to control the sound and splatter.

Here is a thread I started about it recently:

After trying some of the others, I ended up going with Lunatik69's method on my newest tank. It is now quiet enough that it can't be heard with the cabinet door closed.

thank ya'll for responding :) Dixie, I like that idea of how Luna did it. His sump is way more fancy than mine! Mine (input pvc) though is in the corner of the sump. Wonder how i could adapt something like Luna's. In his design the water drops. The way mine is, the return's already under water. My gf suggested maybe drilling holes into the straight section of pvc that's in the sump to help the air get expelled... wattya think of that?

WCW, here is the sump I have; MegaFlow Sump Model 1 if you look the main tubing coming down into the sump has slits in it to help with the air, which in turn, aerates the water. Click on next to see the other models. Hope this helps.

I have "read" of plenty of tweaks to quiet overflows down. I'm sure most work to a a degree. Depends on what your idea of a degree is.

I re plumbed my system and had a horrible bubble problem. Finally, I switched to a Herbie overflow. My system is 100% silent and not one single bubble. I'm not talking about a degree, I'm talking about dead silent zero. Here is my write up. I didn't make it, just copied it.

the pics are small, but i think I can see what you're talking about. They're horizontal slits. I suppose it's along the same idea as my gf's. Worth a try! I still have some pvc left over from the build and it's cheap. thank you for your input :)
