It could work, but I think an MP20 would be better. You can always dial down Vortech PHs, but you can't increase the flow past the max.

i understand you cannot turn it past the max, but do you really think 1500 gph isnt enough for a 40?

Plenty of flow for the corals you want, as they are all low flow corals. But if you ever want to step up to SPS you will need a little more.

I have an MP10 on my 2' 25 gallon tank and its waaaaay too much flow on short pulse at 80%. These pumps are not like koralias or maxijets that just move water around, they kinda manipulate it and create undertows and pretty much eliminate dead spots. like pack said (OMG, its pack!!) I think 1 MP10 on your 40 breeder will be plenty for the corals you have listed.

I have a mp10wes on a 46gal, and I think its plenty. It can get the tank rocking. Its only on about 2/3 of max, I thought of getting another for a slave, but I'm not sure now, lol

The only reason I would recommend more pumps is that one pump is a source of flow from only one direction. I personally think 2 MP10's would be perfect for a 40B but if you don't have the budget for that 1 MP10 and a Koralia or similar on the other side would be better than just a single MP10. I don't like the single powerhead tank setup for tanks that are not smaller cubes, but it will definitely work.

If you need to I would spend less on the return pump (go with a Mag or Ocean Runner or similar) and get a koralia/vortech setup like I mentioned. Return pumps are not very good/efficient for in-tank flow, generally. IMO they are just for moving enough water to/from the display so your skimmer/filtration keeps up.

I have an MP40 on my 55gal and it works very well. Maybe I'm used to more flow, but I would rather go bigger then possibly not be enough. I haven't looked at the new Vortechs, but in the past, the MP20 had more flow modes then the MP10 too.

    Tagging along for this.

I also have a 40 breeder and cannot decide if a MP10/MP20 is the way to go.

There is another thread in the general reef forum that shows the power of an MP10 in a 48" tank. It seems like it's really moving the water.
The only thing holding me back is spending the money on an mp10 and wanting more flow from it.
