That is false. Water has a much much higher heat capacity than air. Submersible pumps are cooled by water wether they are in the sump or outside of the sump. You might loose 10-20% of the heat through the air from a submersible pump running external.

ONLY pumps with fans and fins are air cooled and have no internal cooling that AZ was talking about. These still transfer heat to the water, but much of it is taken away with air. And belive it or not, very few external pumps we use are strictly air cooled.

And since we are on the subject, not all heat is bad heat or waste heat. If you are in climates that require heating... it is truley a waste of heat to get an external pump and run a heater 24/7. Heat is something than needs to be managed and free heat form pumps can be a bad or good thing.

    I'll talk about that below.

    No argument.

If you're talking the same pump inside and out then I don't disagree. Maybe I misunderstood the thread, but I thought the OP was asking about the benefits of internal vs. external pumps, not the same pump being used internally vs. externally.

The bottom line is that if you have a pump running externally and you feel heat when you touch it, that's heat that for the most part isn't being transferred to the water.

Agreed, which is why the majority of pumps burn out when run dry (like my $400 pool pump did just before we sold our FL home when the pool spring a leak).

Agree as well. A submersible pump ran external will loose some heat to the air instead of the water. It is there I just contend it is not as much as people think, nor do I think it is the majority. But I do not have a number or any evidence to say how much.

I haven't run anything other than an external pump for literally decades, but then I tend to have larger tanks where submersible pumps don't really work as well.

Also, it's far less expensive to put heat into the tank than to take it out so I would rather go external.

i have a 55G, 25G sump and run internal(quietone 3000hh). i live in montreal so the daily average temp is below 78f for 9months of the year. the added heat actually helps me. decisions, decisions!

Well why do you want to run external? For heat alone? Is your tank running now? How much heat do you need to get rid of? A Fan will usually be plenty. A return pump alone probably will not be a big deal.... there are other heat reducing ways if that is what you are looking at.

There are plenty of good pumps... Bubble Blaster, Eehiem, Mag. Plenty of good externals too.
