Like all dwarf angels they are not 100% reef safe. They are more reef safe then many of the dwarf angels, but they are less reef safe then others. I feel if you keep it well fed you should have no issues. My brother has one that nipped at his bubble coral, so he picked up the feedings, several small feedings a day, and it has not nipped at anything else.

IME they're beautiful fish that should probably be left where they are in the wild. My LFS reluctantly ordered me one and it lasted about a week. It came in looking great, bright, and active. it didn't eat in my tank for about 3 days then finally started to eat dried nori, but never touched anything else (flake, mysis, angel diet cubes) and after about a week it developed some kind of fungal infection and died within 24 hours.

I asked the guys at the LFS and they all agreed they're one of the more difficult dwarf angels to maintain in captivity and that's why they don't stock them on a regular basis, despite their regular availability from suppliers and fairly low price.

I know there are several people here with success stories, and more power to them. It's simply my opinion that they're probably not the best first choice for a dwarf angel. In terms of coloration a Coral Beauty is almost the same patterning, just switched around in color.

I would say if you do get one make sure it's healthy and eating before purchase. And also, they're apparently disease prone, so a QT period would be an ideal situation before adding it to a display tank....

As for coral nipping, mine completely ignored my corals, never saw it nip once, even when I was worried it was going to starve. It could be a habit they grow into, it may be related to their collection area, it could be entirely dependent on the specimen, I don't know for sure. It's a possibility, but from my short lived attempt, it wasn't a problem for me.

oh just read your flame angel thread, sorry for the loss. If you've got a well established tank and it's not your first go with a dwarf angel then I say give it a shot, they're really the best looking centropyge I've seen... I like the russel/rust angel also.

I have a coral beauty. It's very active, but I also don't have any corals, yet.

I've heard they are pretty hard to keep alive and healthy in captivity.

If you get one at a good dealer (Divers Den) or a LFS that has had it for a while, then you should have no issues with them as far as longevity is concerned.
