Ive read that to relieve stress on an aquarium you are suppose to place some kinda thin foam to even out any uneven spots on the stand so the tank sits flush. Anyone hear of this, if so what do people use?

The tank should sit flush to the stand without anything.

In my THE REEF AQUARIUM vol.3 it states to place a thin piece of styrofoam or rubber mating inbetween the stand and the aquarium to correct any minute inconsistencies between the stand and aquarium. Its states in the book that it will prevent any stress developing on the bottom of the tank.

1/2 high density foam, the pink stuff from Home Depot, Menard's, Lowe's, cost about 12 to 14 dollars a sheet. Like its been said it helps uneven spots on the stand so the tank sits flush and has no extra stress on the joints and glass. IMHO

I have always had foam under my tanks 24", 48" or 72" nomatter the size. until now
The first time I ever see this is here in Canada with my current tank and it has 6 feet/pads under it, I was like whats going on here ? No foam? and the LFS said nope just the feet its ok
So all being said I guess that it should be ok so use with none if just 6 points of contact is ok on a 55g.

I always use some pond matting for any large acrylic tank but for glass is the stand is levels and made correctly then using anything that flexed will cause more stress I would just set it right onto a level stand and make sure the stand is level at the base on the floor Once the glass tank is settled and flexed into its permanent position it will be fine and any matting will cause unleveling and not a solid base. Stuff that you find in a book LOL

With acrylic its needed because the seams can not flex but so much and the padding allows for that like a building foundation in a earthquake area But if not then they like to set the foundation nice and level on sound bed rock.. Stuff you learn in yrs of construction. As I said I'd never set a glass tank on any padding ever..Just get it level the silicon allows for lots of settling and flexing also like a building and once settled its there.
