    Hi Kingterra -

No need to turn heater off Kingterra - its only anything chemical or mechanical in terms of filtration that you dont want running at present, as they would deprive the bacteria of food and thus prolong the cycle period

    PS - Thanks Slocal

    Hi Kingterra

I believe all the advice you have been getting, including the advice from me was based on you setting up a new tank? and laterly the new tank was the 30 gallon

are you saying this clownfish is the one that was in your 10 gallon tank? a

people where giving you advice on setting up this new tank, so I hope you did not turn off a skimmer or remove carbon from an old tank? with the clown in it? as this is not what any of us would have suggested had we known there was fish in the 30 gallon already.

please clarify what you have now

    which tank is it
what water are you using? all new? RO or distilled and not mineral water?

the clown fish may not make it if its in a new tank, with new water, no skimmer and no carbon and going through the cycle especially as you indicate it is not looking very well

if it where me, I would

take the clown fish and any other live inhabitants you have, back to the shop

I would then cycle the 30 gallon tank using one of the methods previously posted

once tank is cycled , I would then go out and purchase fish/ corals as others have also suggested - 1 per week or every 2 weeks

sorry if we have confused you
but the scenario for a tank housing livestock being moved to larger quarters is different than the scenario for setting up a new tank , and its the second scenario that all of us have been advising you as thats what we all believed (I assume) was occuring

welcome Kingterra , but can I suggest

you dont run the skimmer on the 30 for about 4 weeks or until amonia and nitrite have both increased and then dropped back to 0

and that you wait 7 -14 days before adding the damsel ( only need 1 for a 30 gallon tank ) if you put to many fish in to this amount of water at any one time, the bacteria cannot multiply quickly enough to keep up with the fishes waste

and - with a 30 gallon tank you are obviously limited on the amount of fish you can keep safely in there so having 2 damsels would mean 1 less fish of a different species later - You may later regret having 2 damsels ?

this 7 - 14 days will be an ideal time to run tests and check things like the temperature stays stable and there are no equipement problems

patience in this hobby is rewarded - I think everyone on this thread would agree with that

    your welcome Kingterra

for most beginners, the 1st couple of months or so are the hardest, the waiting for the cycle to end before making new additions takes a lot of self control and discipline

good luck and take your time

    Hi Kingterra
whilst the tank hs nothing in or even when it has just fish in, the lights you have will be adequate - so keeping it for the mean time is no problem

but it might not be suitable for corals - as a general guideline you need 4 watts per gallon - so you would need 120 watts over your 30 and your existing lights are 84 total -

colour temp 6k may not be ideal either if you do get T5s then a mix of 10K and Actinic blue in a 1 - 1 ratio is advised by many to be a good lighting range for many corals

so if you could get 4 x 30 watt T5s - 2 X daylight 10K and 2 x Actinic that would be ideal for the future and give you some good choices on corals that would do well
