I'm confused!?

We bought our anemone yesterday and was afraid he was sick cuz he looked like he was melting. This morning my anemone looked perfect. During the night he backed up against a couple of rocks and was large and flowing all day long. Now I'm starting to get scared again- He's all shriveled up and this time his tenticles even look deflated. Help!
Also, if all this normal behavior then how would I know if he was dying?
Is he dying?
I will say that the lighting is excellent-plus its a shallow tank- and the water perameters are great, however our tank is pretty newly set up- i hope he dont die! I didnt know they needed an older set up. Thanks in advance for the help.

 

I am far from being an expert at anything really, But shouldn't you have done a little more research before buying the anemone. You've started a few posts lacking even the basic knowledge of what to feed the anemone. Please do a little more reading of the next critter you buy, that way you don't have to worry much.

 

I'm sorry to be the mean one but yes your anemone is dying. It's called a slow death. It will continue to suffer for the week or weeks. It sound like its not going to live much longer. Please read the thread Your Anemone Is Not Happy.

Reef Lover I am not sure that it is a appropriate to make a judgment like this with as little information as we have been given.
It could be any number of things causing the anemone to close up current,water composition,lighting, is it being picked on by a crab, or is it just closing up?

As far as having not done reseach, I beleive I have. The reason I asked here how and what to feed one is because I have heard of so many different ways and was trying to figure the most popular one given to me. And I have an awsome lfs that has been testing my water for me every week for the last month and a half and he suggested that our tank - plus the lights he sold us previously- would be good for housing an anemone. This is site where your supposed to be able to come and get information based on others peoples experiences, i thought that would be a nice addition to the books/ magazines that I have read, as well as just from what the lfs has told us. I would appreciate it if you would not pass judgement on my previous posts and make the assumption that i did so without having known nothing. I think that is rude. Everyone else who had something helpful to say- thank you- I will keep you posted on how the anemone is doing. Although i do beleive he may be dying. Also, it is a possibility that he may have already been sick isnt it? I beleive we have done everything right.

 

OK. I'm sorry to pass quick judgment, but can you give some info about the tank. Lighting, how long it has been set up, other inhabitants, filters, etc...

 

This is a BTA? I highly doubt it was already sick, it could have also been that you didn't acclimated correctly and might have shocked it. It could also mean a major downgrade in the lighting it was already use to at the LFS and could be getting adjusted to it. I had a BTA that died on me (got him a little too early before I was ready for the anemone) and when he died, he looked completely deflated, including his foot. I agree with K.bear, it looks like he's a goner.

 

How's the mouth, is it a open mouth?

 

55 gal. 2 actinic 65 watts, 2 10,000 K, wet/ dry, venturi protien skimmer, 1 britttlestar, 2 fake percula's, 2 emerald crabs, 1 lettuce nudibranch, 1 flame hawkfish, 1 coral beauty. All of these the pet store said would be fine with an anemone. The tank is four months old. Temp. @ 78. Specific gravity- 1.023, nitrates & nitrites both 0, KH 300, ph 8.4.

 

mouth is open, we called the pet store, he doesnt want to take him back, and just thinks that maybe he is still trying to adjust to our tank--I dunno--
