what size of tank and what inhabitants are you planning on keeping? this will determine what you will need.

Look for something rated for a 100 gallon tank.

I assume you dont have a sump (a vessel or tank of water under your main tank)
if not , then you will probably want to go with a Hang On Back (HOB) skimmer

check out the for sale section on this site as there are often second hand skimmers for sale
also check out Craigs List as they often have HOB skimmers on there
also E - bay is another site worth looking at for second hand stuff

    models
AquaC Remora - have a great reputation amongst reef keepers
SWC - they make a very nice range of HOB skimmers that are also worth looking at
Deltec MCE600 would make a great skimmer for a 55 , IMO ( they are expensive new, but you might find a good deal second hand)

avoid - anything that doesnt give a brand name on the advert on E bay for example
as there are a large number of lookalikes and clones available but they often use cheaper pumps, inferior materials etc and you dont get the efficiency or effectiveness you would want
