Ok, I got tired of my HOB filter and I'm looking for a sump set-up and I got confussed(again). What are sump, berlin and refugium and there differences?

Which should I use for my 60gal cube?

should I buy or make one? I wan it under my cabinet but that thing is only 22x22 or so on the inside.

a sump is a vessel for holding water/ equipment that often sits under the tank (does not have to, but it is obviously convenient for many for it to be there)

a refugium, is a seperate tank or an isolated by baffles (walls ) area within a sump, in which sand, algae like chaeto or caulerpa are used to naturaly utilise nitrates

Berlin system is a system of tank management which basically involves a lot of live rock, very good water movement, and a decent skimmer (no other means of biological filtration although many would have reactors with Carbon, GFO as chemical filtration support)

your 60 gallon cube would certainly benefit from a sump and also a refugium
if you can incorporate both into a tank under the cabinet so much the better

Can we get the exact dimensions of the space you have under cabinet to be used. It would greatly help as would a pic or two of the entire setup currently.

If you can, I would highly recommend building your own out of a used aquarium.

I will get some pictures once I get home from work. I will make sure I take the pictures with a measuring tape so you have a better idea of the space that is there.

I do not have any othe tank and I need to get one for QT ASAP. So far all my live stock have come from the same LFS and I also have them check my water every now and then.

I was looking on getting a 20 gal tall but that wont fit because It will be hanging to the back or it wont fit sideways. my best bet is an 18 gal tall but I cant find any used around my area and to buy one used I rather buy a new sump(IMO). because by the time I get the tank plus all the extras to make a sump with it it will be the same amout of $$.

    I see...

Thank you for the explanation. Is a lot more clear than what I've seen online and threads. They all looked the same except for the wet and dry set up that looks a lil diffrent. Now I can understand better how each one work. I will like to go with a fuge/sump set up and no skimmer for now. I don't want the skimmer after my fuge.

    Sorry for the delay!

Here are some pics of my stand. As you can see there numbers on my tape measure are unreadable but I will tell you that where the tape meets the wood horizontally is shy of 23 in. On the picture that shows the tape from the back opening towards the screen is about 22 in.

cubes are hard to find sumps that would fit. the largest standard thing would be a 10g tank, which is a bit small imo. You can always have a custom sump built, but it'll cost a bit extra

I know what you mean, I'm looking at 3 choices, my first choice is an Aqueon model 1 sump, a 16gal tall glass tank or a eshopp sump(the smaller one) if I get one custom made I'll make it myself.
