I just got a circulation pump (1250GPH) for my 55G FOWLR tank.

    1) Where is the ideal spot to put this guy? Right now I have it about 5 inches down from the surface on the side glass.

    2) It's creating strong current on top. Is that bad?

    3) What angle is ideal?

    Its depends..
If you have and overflow box, I put mine at the other end of the tank, I also have one twords the top to create that natural sunlight ripple in the water(looks great at night and with MH). Do you have any corals that require high water flow? If so adjust to get them what they need. I really think the key with water flow is to get water movement throughout your whole tank. Mine took a lot of adjusting until every space in the tank i can notice water movement.

Where you have it is o.k. you may want to aim it slightly upward to produce surface agitation. I would consider adding another one the next step down from the one you have and place it on the opposite side toward the back and aim it toward the front center of the front glass. That will give you a good turbulent current for over-all circulation and a good play ground for your fish.

A side note ill add is I can check my water flo when I add purple-up to my tank (it creates a cloudiness to the water and I can see actually where or not the flow of the water is going).

I use a piece of fishing line to see where the currents are. Use 20-pound test :)
