    Greetings,

I have had this growth on one of my smaller rocks in a corner of the tank. It started out slowly and small, but it is getting bigger. I have noticed a small growth of it on my cluster duster as well. Please identify for me.

    Thanks,
    Anoush

If it is the red strands you are asking about, it looks to be red gracilaria algae.

A type of red algae. Please take better pictures and contact John Maloney or Reef Cleaners, one of our sponsors. He should be able to help the best.

If its red gracilaria algae as Peter suggests (and I think he's right) you're Tangs, if you have any, should be loving it.

I agree with 2in10 that you should reach out to John Maloney - you will get a detailed response.

Now, after that we need to discuss why its growing -- do you want to have a converation regarding excess nutrients, DOC's etc. We are here to help on all fronts !

Thank you all for your replies. I don't have a tang and can't have one unfortunately as my tank is not large enough.

Crimson, what is DOC? I have already started feeding less food to my fish and keeping the light on a little less.

oh sorry, DOC is dissolved Organic Compounds - removed via skimmers and water changes.

Edit - If you wish to please tell us your parameters, maintenance shedule compelte set up and we can try and deduce why you have this algae growing. Reducing lights to kill an algae is a bandaid, you need to go after the cause and rectify it.
