I had that same 55g aqueon kit. Bought it two years ago. Bottom was tagged as tempered and the sides are NOT tempered. I was able to drill a hole in the side of it without problem. Since then I have drilled a couple other holes as well after finally purchasing my own bit. (borrowed one the first time..)

so the bottom is tempered and sides are not. what about the front and back nobody ever mentions that just the sides. i dont want to hang an ugly pipe off the side of my tank.....this would be on the back panel.

well perhaps ill re-itterate.... i put a hole in one of the 48" long sides. (They're all sides to me... there is no "front/back" to me when I discuss a rectangular glass box :) )

heres a link to my sump build thread that had a pic of my 40gal breeder tank that i put a hole in the side of as well..

    http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/40gal-long-sump-build-80277.html

this was a 40gal AGA breeder tank. tempered bottom, non-tempered sides. took about 8minutes to put a hole through it.

i used plumbers putty to create a 1" high circle offset by about .5" around the perimeter of the hole-to-be-cut, and used 10W-30 motor oil and poured a bit on the glass inside the putty dam and started to drill. the motor oil served great as the bit didnt even warm up. some use water, but i prefer to use a serious heat reducing lubricant to keep my bits nice and sharp for years on end.
