So, metal halide is now very important to me. I want it really badly. But spending the kind of money on fixtures has never been a good idea in the girlfriend's head so I just thought I'd make it up myself hehe:devil1:

So I went to the electrical shop (just to get some prices) but I just couldn't resist... Shh... don't tell her I bought these, she'll kill me. They were very inexpensive the ballast w/ condenser and bulb along with discount came up to TT$747.58 or US$118.66

Then I went to a place that did aluminum signs and ordered the housing for it. I haven't gotten a quote for it as yet. Here are some pics sry about the bad quality, I had to take them quickly before she sees it:devil1:

    Uh.

What's the spectrum of your bulb? You can't just get a stadium bulb and throw over your tank and have it work well. Does the bulb have UV protection? Otherwise you're going to cook your tank.

+1. I would buy an actual aquarium bulb. That hardware stor bulb is going to be right around 5000K-6500K. Great for growing algae, but not corals ;)

Dude, I have no Idea if it is the right spectrum. I have no clue when it comes to lighting. I'm not seeing anything on the bulb regarding the spectrum.

The guy said that it does have UV protection. This being said, just wondering, could I use a "black light" bulb in a reef tank? I don't have any but I was wondering.

This bulb and the hardware store was referred to me by the only coral fragger in Trinidad so I believe that it's the right kelvin although I can't see anything on the box or the buld regarding it's kelvin rating.

If you look that 400w bulb up you will see it has a wide variety of kelvin ranges. I found 4000k bulbs that are used for lighting up your yard. I have these bulbs on the back of my house and it will light up over an acre. Goodluck.
