I like the idea....I was really looking into them for a while there, then I just decided to use my APC UPS's that I have for all my servers in case of an extended outage. I have 2-3 APC 1500's which should run my pumps for a day between them all.

I still like the generator idea though!!! Go For It!!

I have a Champion 3500w generator myself and it comes in handy. Its on wheels too.
I looked at the specs on the HD Sportsman model and it lists the decibel sound levels at 80, thats extremely loud. My employer requires hearing protection at anything over 82 dB.
In comparison the Champion is rated at 66 decibels if I remember right, not silent by any means but much quieter. I just looked at Champion has a new 2000w unit available in August that will be only 53 decibels.
They are available at any Checker/Schucks/Kragen/OReilleys/ Parts America auto parts and even Cabellas and Sams.
My 3500 was normally $299 but I got it for $238 with a coupon

Well I did it...I decided to do a little craigslist shopping before i bought at a store..and landed a basically brand spankin new Coleman Powermate 6250 (5000W Running Power)...I bought it from a gentleman who OBVIOUSLY has money (brand new corvette, big house(with koi pond inside), brand new chrysler 3000 for the wife)...he said he ran it for about 5hrs total...it started on the first try, and it doesnt have a scratch on it...he sold it to me for $300...YIPPY! I'm going to be so popular with the neighbors if the electric goes out here (its PRETTY loud..even tho its considered a quiet model) lol I'd hate to hear the LOUD model!

I have a coleman its also so loud. I only use that one at the job sites. I use my honda at my house. I also have a home depot 5000 k model that is quiet. Those are the ones I use around the house due to noise of the coleman. I loan the colman to the neighbors in the winter during power outs.

Yeh I'm thinking I might build a small well sound insulated building to run the generator in.. otherwise it will probably drive me nuts as well...hopefully i'll never have to use it..but...my mind is now at peace that my reef and pred tank will live on in a power outage :)

I have a coleman 5000 also, good generator but like previously said it is LOUD, no way in hell you could sleep with it running near your home, gets about 7-9 hours on a tank of fuel and can run basically everything important in my current home, keeping it as a campsite generator for when I go out on extended weekends and as a loaner for the renters moving into my home, close on my new house next week and already got a 7kw generac natural gas generator planned for the new place, will be hard wired into the circuit breaker all we'll have in an extended power outage is about a 5-10 minute time frame with no power until it kicks on and run pretty much everything in the home from ac/heat ect, the only things I won't have it hooked into is the 220/240 for the washer/dryer

Yeh when we move out of this house and into a bigger one in the next few years, i'm thinkin Big Standby Generator may be on the list of "must haves"

I think in this hobby if you don't have one your crazy, people complain about spending 400-700 bucks on one but in all reality add up the cost of your livestock if you were to lose it all due to no power for 8 hours, I promise you it won't seem like such a big ticket item after that. It's going to cost me around 5k for the standby NG unit but the other thing to take into consideration is the fact it's instant equity into your home to, esspecially here where I live in tornado alley if your selling a home and the buyer's see one it's going to be a massive perk to purchase

It sucks that townhouses aren't exactly the best place to run a generator, what with all the other houses literally right on top of yours.
