It should never be a problem as long as the overflow is wide open. The return pump should balance out with the overflow rate if the overflow is sized correctly and you are getting sufficient air to the standpipes so they flow smoothly.

Maybe I should get a better pump then.. I will have to make sure the overflow is fully open next time.

As mentioned above, your standpipe is supposed to be pulling a small amount of air for draining. The air enters the drain line through a small, single (or multiple) hole in the highest most section of your drain lines (where they T behind the tank). The small holes limit the air, which reduces all the noise, aka gurgling. (Which is only true if your tank water level is above the bulkheads)

For the drain lines, what's on the inside of that tank? Any plumbing pieces or an overflow?

I'm with barbianj, your main drain lines aren't supposed to be restricted.

I may be totally off, but I'm guessing if there isn't a down-turned elbow on the inside of the tank, for your drain, then the water level is staying at the bulkhead levels. And, by restricting your drain lines you are forcing the level in the tank to rise, which is eliminating any gurgling sound as water AND air enter the bulkheads.
