Ok no actually it held the bio balls on it and i took off the sock should i also take of the filter pad at the bottom going to the return and skimmer compartment i have plaenty of live rock in the tank so do i need the sponge you see in the pic or no cause i heard the macro will take care of everything and it will also grow critters for the main tank

You do not need the sponge for filtration reasons
although if you remove it and all the algae moves next door, then thats probably not ideal

so if you remove it and the algae stays where it is, or you can place a plastic mesh screen where the sponge is to keep algae in the 1st chamber
    that would be ideal IMO

I will move this thread out of ASAP now Reeflife1911
as the urgency is now dealt with

the HOB will not be required for biological filtration in most cases
as your LFS indicated, the rock, sand etc in the tank will take care of the processing of ammonia, through to nitrogen gas

the HOB could be used to run chemical filter media
such as carbon or GFO or Purigen etc

do not remove the HOB or the contents of the HOB in 1 go though
as at present some of your beneficial bacteria lives there, and some of it lives on the rock etc

should you decide to remove or change it from bio media to chemical media
    remove the contents in stages
remove 25% per week over 4 weeks
and this will allow the bacteria in your rock, sand etc, enough time to multiply adequately to compensate for bacteria being removed from the HOB

I put it in general reef section for now Reeflife
its still easy to find so do not worry

if you keep the pads clean, rinsing in tank water
they do not always become the so called Nitrate factories
but it is maintenance that is not required in a system with enough
    rock and flow
