I'm officially ticked off at these 2 MJ1200's that I have in my tank in circulation mode. Don't get me wrong, the pumps are great and haven't failed me since the day I got them. After I first installed them, it took me about a week to find a good position for them so they don't kick up any sand and make create sand dunes in my tank with the bottom glass showing in places. The other day I put in some coral frags and moved the one pump just a hair to one side and boom, same deal with sand everywhere. I'm thinking of getting 2 Hydor Koralia Evolution 1500 GPH pumps. I need a little professional opinion with this please. I have a 55 tall and the 2 MJ1200's I had produce good flow for the tank, they are just jet nozzles for the tank. Would the Koralia 1500's produce too much or not enough? Or should I get 3 smaller ones? My tank has slowly been transforming to SPS dominant.

Have a look at the Jebao WP25. just 1 might be enough for your tank.

The two Koralias would put you in the lower range for SPS at slightly under 55x. Some run 100x or more in their tanks.

Unfortunately, you can only achieve laminar flow with one pump. SPS corals require strong random currents which is accomplished with a wavemaker or multiple powerheads pointed so that their outputs collide at angles. Otherwise, the coral's skeletons won't grow in the proper formations.

If you want an sps dominant tank two wp25s may be a good way to go.Sand being moved would probably still be a problem as would finding areas of low flow for corals that like less.Evo 1500s would also give you a lot of flow but would not create as much random flow, they are also a much larger pump and more of an eyesore in your tank.Either choice would give you much better flow than maxijets.

+1 with all here, I run about 102x turnover for my gorgonian collection with 4 different pumps/powerheads (Biocube 14)

BTW Mr. Bill, jebao wp 25/40 are wave makers :p

I'm going to check out those jebao pumps. I know I have the smaller evo for my frag tank and it is an eye sore. The thing is almost twice the size of the mj1200 and about 10 times weaker lol. the sand on the other hand is annoying. I might just end up starting to pull a cup out every few days to reduce the amount I have. I would put crushed coral in there but that's too much maintenance to keep clean.

No worries :) I still agree that one wouldn't be enough even if it is a wave maker, the OP should have at least 2 pumps to guarantee random flow.

Am I correct that you are NOT using the fans mods that come with the MJ, but rather the nozzle?

The fans push WAY more water, but in a broader type flow.
If you're not using them, I'd try that first.

I'm using the fan mod that comes with it and it's pushing a lot of water. I just feel limited to adjustments because I'm using the clip that hangs off the rim of the tank to hold the pumps on. The suction cups really aren't all that great and come off after a short time. I figured that if I'm going to spend another 40 bucks for the magnet mods on these guys that it's better I just buy myself a decent powerhead lol. So that's my real issue I guess is that I can't really get it to where I want it so it doesn't stir up the sand.
