I guess to start off, thanks for everyone's input on all of the other threads I have been reading over the past two moths, although this is my first post I have enjoyed everyone's input and advice on all of the other threads.

I'm in the middle of setting up my first salt water tank. I decided on a 125Gal all glass with over flows and a megaflow sump model 4. I have also picked up a 29Gal qt tank.

I have enjoyed learning about the hobby and it has intreaged me more and more now that I know you don't just put water, salt and fish into a tank and walk away. its more exciting knowing that I am building a small ocean for my future pets, I think all of the different aspects of building the perfect environment are what has drawn me in more and more.

I have just about everything setup right now, just getting ready to add salt to my RO water in the 125Gal tank and the only other things I think I need yet/or were planning to get were a protein skimmer (ASM G2 or AquaC EV140) and then a UV filter, any suggestinos are much appreciated.

Looking forward to being part of this community,

    Gomie

Welcome to 3reef. Glad to have you. For a UV I just purchased a coralife turbo-twist 12x. It is rated for up to 500 gallons but I only have a 120 gallon tank. I have only had it running for a couple days so I cant really say how it performs yet but it was easy to set up.

Are UV filters a good idea? What do they do?

Im no expert , never having used one, but I can tell you that they are supposed to kill off parasites - as the water is pumped through the Ultra Voilet light unit

there are formulaes - indicating the flow rates - as if water passes through to quickly then the parasite is not in contact ling enough and thus gets a bit of a tan , but does not die

Not sure what else they do, hopefully someone else will join in and fill in the blanks for us both

Howdy! and welcome to 3Reef, I've never have owned one, but if you intend to keep corals
then maybe you be getting rid of some micro organisms that might be consume by them, and again the UV does not know the difference between beneficial and parasites :\
