I have a pair of tank-raised ocellaris clowns that don't seem to know how to host anything. I have a large elegance coral, a red BTA, torch, and loads of other things they could potentially host - but don't know how.

How can I teach them? I heard once that you could take a cut-out of a clownfish and tie it somehow to the anemone/coral....but I can't figure out how to stick it there without hurting the coral...

Give them time - they will eventually host whether an anemone or a power head!!!

Usually it just takes time and a point when they are ready to host. To potentially help speed up the process you can tap a picture on the outside of your tank of a clown hosting something or you can get a laminated picture of a clown and attack it to a rock as close as possible to a "hostable" coral. If you do try one of these methods, watch the behavior of your clown towards the picture of the clown. Sometimes they can become aggressive towards the picture and potentially hurt themselves trying to attack it.

Just give them time. Both mine are tank raised and after a few weeks found they liked the hammer coral and the frogspawn. At first my b&w hosted my bt nem and then once I took the nem out it moved to the hammer coral. Sometimes I will move the hammer and frogspawn around but the clowns always seem to find them.

this may be wierd but ive heard you can tape a picture of a clown inside an anemone to the tank where they hang out and they can learn from that , ive even heard of people setting up a laptop with a bunch of photos like that on slideshow >,< who knows lol

Although this wasnt my thread, I did get some good info. I also have a pair of clowns that insist on hosting the back wall of the tank.....also have some great LPS that they could host, but its been about a month now and nothing. I might have to try taping a picture to the tank.

Get rid of one and replace it with a wild caught one.

Patience is the key here... It could take a month, it may take 6 but they will eventually host in something. Some of ours have taken to hosting in a Montipora Peltiformis. :)
