The bean setup isn't very complicated. It's just 3 drain pipes with one pointed up and another with a valve on it. And it is silent and has more flood prevention. There's tons of stories of people having floods from clogs or snails etc that wouldn't have happened with a bean setup, and a ton of complaints on system noise in a main room as well. It maybe took me another 5-10 minutes to make my setup a bean (including drilling), and maybe $10 more dollars.

With the modified Stockman design it would be next to impossible for a snail or anything else to restrict the standpipe, its quiet as can be in my dining room even with a WaterBlaster HY5000 pump on it and simple as heck. Again no reason to complicate something as simple as a siphon.

i currently have a 4 gallon nano ref setup and i stay on top of the levels and stuff and haven't had any problems. i wouldn't need to dose anything because weekly water changes will put the nutrients back into the tank. i was just going to try a sump on a 10 gallon so i could have micro algae and hide most equipment. i like not seeing much of the equipment. it was just an idea. and i already know that the fish stocking would be limited but im more into the reef part of it. i would be fine with 1 or 2 fish. but i can see how having a bigger tank would be better! i might just wait in order to get a 20 long or 29 gallon or something! thanks everyone!

    homyg,

You've definitely got the right idea regarding hiding equipment...I absolutely HATE seeing equipment in our DT's, so we generally run sumps and CL's on our "nice" DT's, but not necessarily on our growout/QT's.

    AZ,

I TOTALLY agree, but we run Durso standpipes instead of Stockman mods. Simple is GOOD!
