i only have about a half inch - an inch in my 25. there's a calculator online here somewhere for determining how much sand you'll need. Just google sand bed depth calculator

Its personal choice. I prefer taller stands myself. I measure up about 6ft, so less bending down the better. Plus for me with kids those couple extra inches are a deterent from the toy, hot dog or who knows what might be tempted to go swimming. I'de say mine is roughly 36-40" on my 75.

All about preference and equipment. I will be building a 150 Gallon soon, and my stand will be 54" from the ground. I like to view my tanks at eye level. I am 6' 4", and will probably need a small step ladder for maintenance, but I am okay with that. My skimmer will be 26" tall, and my sump will be 6" up from the bottom of the stand. I am going to use 2x6's for the long runs under the tank, so I will have roughly 18" of workable space between my skimmer and bottom of tank support. Most stands would have 2-4" remaining.

Where are you putting the tank? Its really up to your own preference, but for tanks in the living room where you will be sitting on the couch most the time, I prefer much lower stands. I built mine 26 inches tall, and I was able to get a 20 gallon sump and skimmer under the stand, but it was a SQUEEZE to say the least. When I sit on my couch, the tank is at eye level, which is exactly what I wanted.

Good points on relevance of where the tank is positioned and viewed. I also prefer eye level so you don't have to stoop to view. Mine's 42" high with 24" high tank. I love the extra room underneath, it's so much easier to setup equipment and do maintenance. I keep a step stool stashed close by as it is constantly needed; also a long reach grabber tool for picking up items off the sand.
I included a ledge around the bottom edge to lean on and have a place to put things down.

I built mine at about 36inches. But my tank is only 12inches high and can still easily reach into any part of it. Should take into consideration what you want to do underneath and how you will be working in the tank.

I went with a 36"stand despite my 30"of glass. I use a ladder for maintenance, it's no big deal.Gives an awesome viewing angle, but makes it harder to see the tops of my corals that are mounted high in the tank. The top angle is the most dramatic on many species of sps.. So it's a give and take. All in all i'm happy I went with a taller stand than average.

Build it to the skimmer's needs underneath would be my suggestion. I think a taller stand for more storage room and work space underneath is good. I wish I had built mine 6 inches taller (36").
