By far not the cheapest way to do it, but I've ordered 48 x 24 sheet of black acrylic online. Same stuff that engravers use to make desk signs, reward plaques etc. Main benefit here you can remove it, clean everything and put it right back on. In the long term salt and water should have little effect on acrylic.

I've taped it to the back of the aquarium and it looks awesome!

i used krylon and it sucked so i went over it with rustoleum black and it was amazing and actually you can use a glass scraper to remove the paint also you wont go back after you paint the tank just decide what color you want either dark blue or black are the most common used paints it also has been said to relax spaz fishs like firefish

Poster board works good, easy to install and cost nil.

    Can I suggest tile?

More seriously, please make sure you know how to lay down nice even coats, then get a can of Krylon and paint the back. Nothing you stick on will be as visually satisfying. I understand your father's reticence, but he will change his mind when he gets a look at it.

I like that Oceanvisions mirror backing....can use it to see fish hiding behind the rocks.

I also thought of using thin acrylic sheets one blue and one black (or one clear that I painted..maybe one that's a bit of several blues blended together)then gluing those wide spring brackets that hold the backs of picture frames to the trim of my tank to hold the acrylic in place.

on my 46 I have some thick vinyl tint for cars that you apply with water, from tap plastics, it works well and I can see through the back of the tank (since it's "backlit" at that vantage) which is cool.

You don't from the front, it looks all black unless you have a brighter light source behind your tank than what's over it....lol, but since my tank sits a bit past the corner of a wall I can see through it from the back when the tank lights are on, which is cool.

This is what it looks like...this was when I first started my tank...my recent pics look horrible due to my camera messing up. The white dots are microbubbles from the HOB filter or skimmer or both.

Its really easy to apply, you can get different variations at walmart, and its not expensive at all to buy.
